Barcelona Winter Walk
10 things to do where walking is the 11th
Barcelona does not ascribe to the old cliché that culture in winter has to be experienced indoors. Here, museums and theatres engage in a dialogue with sunny streets and a mild climate. Discover 10 things to do so you can enjoy the city like a living cultural tapestry.

"Miró and the United States" - Fundació Joan Miró
One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century meets the most influential country of the same period. This is a story of reciprocity, art and mutual impact. An individual story with a global resonance, which allows us to understand and reimagine the past, present and future of Western art.
Through key works and correspondence, this exhibition, which is part of the Barcelona Art Season, explores for the first time the relationship between Miró and the United States, alongside works by more than forty artists brought together in Barcelona in this unique and unrepeatable show.

A classical music concert - Palau de la Música Catalana
Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana is a Catalan Art Nouveau jewel and UNESCO World Heritage icon, hailed by contemporaries for its daring design, symbolism, and lavish decoration—perhaps nothing in the city has surpassed it. Every detail is unique; step inside and experience it for yourself. This winter is the perfect moment, especially on December 19, when the hall hosts a one-day-only performance of J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, a sublime way to feel Christmas in Barcelona through its biblical scenes. Beyond the Palau, Barcelona shines as a classical-music capital in winter: L’Auditori presents major symphonic programs and choral recitals, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu ranks among Europe’s great opera houses. Together, the three venues unite under Barcelona Obertura, which promotes the city internationally and curates themed concert seasons. The result is a citywide season of world-class classical music.

A single-artist museum - Museu Tàpies
At the Museu Tàpies, art and thought are inseparable. The collection is not just a display of top-quality works, but a reflection of the artist’s ideas, inviting visitors to engage with his vision as well as his practice.
Its home, the former Montaner i Simón publishing house designed by Domènech i Montaner, creates a dialogue of its own, where architectural tradition meets artistic radicalism. Current exhibitions extend this conversation, such as the unconventional and lyrical works by André du Colombier.
And Barcelona is unique in this respect: it is the only city in the world where three giants of modern art – Picasso, Miró and Tàpies – have a museum dedicated to their legacy.

"Michelangelo Antonioni and Luigi Ghirri" - Palau de la Virreina
A free exhibition bringing together Antonioni’s photographic series The Enchanted Mountains and Ghirri’s works from the 1970s. A way of embracing nature through imagination and abstraction. Two artists who never met. Two bodies of work that speak in silence. Michelangelo Antonioni, filmmaker of the invisible, and Luigi Ghirri, photographer of the overlooked. Both discovered beauty in the fleeting details of ordinary life. Their images are not spectacles but invitations to observe, to remember, to pause. A dialogue unfolds between imagination, memory and nature. As Georges Perec suggested, it is in what happens when nothing seems to happen that we uncover the deepest truths. That is precisely what Ghirri and Antonioni sought to reveal. And this exhibition makes it clear for an audience that values aesthetic experiences which defy haste and superficiality.

"L'elisir d'amore" - Gran Teatre del Liceu
Barcelona is strengthening its bond with one of the greatest composers of all time: Gaetano Donizetti. The Italian master, who is one of the most performed composers in the history of the Liceu, returns with L’Elisir d’amore, reinterpreted and given a modern reworking by Mario Gas. A fresh retelling of the opera with intelligent humour, which is perfect for a wide audience, staged in one of Europe’s most beautiful and historic opera houses.

A design museum - DHub Barcelona
At DHub Barcelona, design, art and innovation converge. Located in a striking building in Plaça de les Glòries, it bridges past and future through iconic collections and contemporary explorations of creativity.
As the home of the city’s design museum, the Museu del Disseny, DHub preserves and displays fashion, graphics, product design and crafts, inviting visitors to experience Barcelona through a creative lens. Beyond exhibitions, it fosters talent and ideas with talks, festivals and awards, making the city a living showcase of design, culture and innovation.
DHub is Barcelona’s key venue for the recognition and promotion of its creative industries.

Seasonal food to enjoy - Escudella
When it comes to traditional dishes, we know what we’re talking about. Escudella i carn d’olla is the name of Europe’s first documented soup dish. And what could be a better companion on your journey into the real Barcelona than a seasonal recipe rooted in the land and its people?
Once a daily meal for Catalans, this broth of meat, sausage and winter vegetables gradually acquired near-mythical status until it became the dish of choice for our Christmas celebrations.
It is still served today at our traditional restaurants that still brighten winter nights with the very same recipe that once delighted our ancestors, as well as in haute-cuisine establishments that reinterpret it with contemporary flair. Seek it out, you won’t be disappointed.

A local gift - Artisan nougat
Eight hundred years ago, King Jaume I of Aragon asked the chefs who had cemented the reputation of Catalan cuisine in medieval Europe to create a delicious and indulgent sweet treat to end his daughter’s wedding banquet in style in keeping with their royal status. The result was a confection of almonds, honey and egg known in Catalonia as "torró".
As the years went by, it became Catalonia’s quintessential Christmas treat and was no longer just found on the tables of kings and nobles. Today, you can enjoy turró in its most traditional form or in the amazing different varieties created by cutting-edge confectioners and chefs, making it a meeting point between centuries of tradition and the creativity of contemporary food. You’ll find it at the city’s most traditional and unique patisseries – such as Foix de Sarrià, La Colmena or Mauri – as well as at specialist turró shops, like Vicens and La Campana.

On January 5, Barcelona immerses itself in one of its most magical traditions: the Cavalcada de Reis. The arrival of the Three Wise Men fills the city with expectation and wonder, as children await the gifts that mark the end of the festive season.
The kings come ashore in the port before going on a spectacular parade through the streets on ornate floats, accompanied by music, dancers and a cascade of sweets. More than a children’s tradition, it is a spectacle that captivates both young and old.
