Pablo Picasso & Sala Gaspar (1955 /1973) - Museu PicassoBarcelona Art Season, Exhibitions
06/27/2025 - 10/26/2025

The exhibition Pablo Picasso and the Sala Gaspar (1955 – 1973) pays tribute to the close relationship between the painter and the gallery owners Joan and Miquel Gaspar, who were fundamental in promoting Picasso's work in Barcelona. Through this show, the friendship forged between Picasso and the Gaspar cousins is explored, two key individuals in organising numerous exhibitions of the artist at the Consell de Cent gallery between 1956 and 1973, until Picasso's death.

The exhibition highlights the arrival of Las Meninas at the Museu Picasso, a pivotal moment in the city's art history, in which the Gaspars played an essential role. Original documentation is presented, showcasing the works exhibited at Sala Gaspar, emphasising the Gaspars' influence on the recognition and dissemination of Picasso's work in Barcelona, as well as the importance of their archive in preserving the artist's memory.

Furthermore, the exhibition addresses the context of censorship during the Franco dictatorship, highlighting the role of private galleries such as Sala Gaspar in the reception and diffusion of Picasso's work at a time of scarce institutional support.
